Twelve volunteers from the Black Hills Back Country Horsemen of South Dakota (BH BCH SD) spent last weekend clearing the Old Baldy trail located near Spearfish, SD of trees that had fallen due to a tornado that hit the area on June 29, 2018.
BH BCH SD brushed and cleared 7.2 miles of the trail wide enough for horse and bike use and removed overhead hazards.
“They are valued partners in restoration, riding etiquette and trail maintenance on public lands,” said Steve Kozel, Northern Hills District Ranger. “The commendable work they accomplished on Old Baldy is one example of this groups’ drive to provide an amazing trail riding experience for Forest users.”
BH BCH SD is a non-profit organization that has been involved in many projects across the Forest since 2011. BH BCH SD works with the Forest through a volunteer agreement. They must meet safety standards and take training prior to project work, which includes obtaining certification in CPR/First Aid and cross-cut and chainsaw use.
Back Country Horsemen of America has 194 chapters in 31 states with over 13,000 members. The Black Hills chapter was formed in 2010 and currently has about 90 members. Their overall mission is to promote knowledge of use and enjoyment of horses in America’s back country and wilderness area by assisting public land managers in maintaining trails and facilities. They assist on public land projects that include: trail maintenance, trail construction, educational programs and other projects.
