Special Olympics South Dakota’s Law Enforcement Torch Run starts today (May 13) and ends Thursday with Opening Ceremonies for the summer games in Vermillion.
Law Enforcement officers and two Special Olympics athletes will bring the “Flame of Hope” to 38 cities to help raise awareness for Special Olympics.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run teams start in Sioux Falls and Spearfish and go across the state.
Runners will stop in Murdo Tuesday afternoon and in Pierre, Winner, Platte, Highmore and Miller Wednesday morning.
The actual running portion has evolved over the years from running the interstate, to the current format, where officers travel to cities and invite local Law Enforcement, Special Olympics athletes and the public to come and join them as they carry the “Flame of Hope” through the city.
