PIERRE – The Pierre Governor girls tennis and boys golf teams are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 10.
At the A State Championship in Rapid City, Governor girls tennis finished third, its best team showing since 2005, and Marlee Shorter won the #3 flight singles title, the first for Pierre since 2006. Shorter competed alongside Kara Weiss, Sydney Tedrow, Jocelyn Corrales, Kourtney Walti, Gracie Zeeb, Carissa Ott and Caitlin Ott. Head coach Jessica Carr said of her team, “After placing 9th last year at state, these girls put in the time and effort it takes to make incredible improvements this season and placed 3rd as a team. Their dedication and ambition is admirable and is what drives them forward as a team. Many coaches took the time to complement how well these girls placed not only as a team, but many placing well individually in their flights. Not only are these ladies impressive athletes who are dedicated to doing their best on the court, but these are also impressive students who balanced their school responsibilities sometimes between matches in order to keep grades up and be the best student they can be. This is an impressive group of ladies that are very deserving of the accomplishments they’ve achieved this season.”
A very young Pierre boys golf team finished an impressive seventh at the AA State Championship in Sioux Falls. Sawyer Sonnenschein had one of the tournament’s best rounds, a 76 that left him only three shots off the individual lead after 18 holes. Nick Bothun shot 79 on the second day. The other starters were Jonathan Lyons, Luke Olson, Jack Bartlett and Lincoln Houska. Governor reserves were Andy Gordon, Dawson Getz, Shawn Vanliere and Carter Gordon. Head coach Chris Swiden said, “It was a whole team effort and I am really proud of how the team responded to the challenge.”
