During public forum at the beginning of Tuesday’s (Dec. 29, 2020) Walworth County Commission meeting, two Walworth County residents addressed the comments that were made at the last meeting by Commissioner Kevin Holgard regarding the hiring of members of the military, and asked for his resignation.
Bob Thomason said Holgard’s comments were “discriminatory, disgraceful, and unbecoming of a county commissioner.”
Thomason had some parting words for outgoing commissioner Marion Schlomer.
Bill Waeckerle also spoke to the board.

There was discussion about the duties and hours of an Extension Administrative Assistant. The matter will be on the next agenda.
Walworth County resident Emily Stiegelmeier thanked the commission for the recent engineering survey on the Blue Blanket Flood Remediation on 300th Avenue. She is supportive of the project that will provide natural drainage across her land. Highway Superintendent Gary Byre said the culvert is in across 300th, but the equalizer pipes will have to wait until spring.
Motions were approved for budget supplements to the Sheriff’s office – $150,000 for 2020 and $214,000 for 2021.
A jail boarding contract with Winner was approved for signature. Cost is $70 per day for adult inmates.
Sheriff Josh Boll asked Commissioner Holgard to explain his comments in a recent newspaper article which Boll took to mean that he, the sheriff, is to blame for the county being over budget while making decisions not popular with the commission. Holgard said nothing in defense of those particular quotes in the paper. Sheriff Boll read his response to that article.
For the landfill, a motion to authorize the purchase for a pickup was approved, as was a motion for a budget supplement to landfill repairs and maintenance in the amount of $56,785.
Commissioner Scott Schilling started discussion about putting background checks in the personnel policy. Auditor Rebecca Krein will check with other counties to see what their policies are regarding background checks.
The board also accepted the resignation of Walworth County Weed Supervisor Dave Ritter effective January 15th, 2021.
