The State of South Dakota and the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service have finalized an agreement to allow selected state-inspected meat and poultry processors to ship their products across state lines.
Under the Cooperative Interstate Shipment agreement, state inspectors may inspect meat in qualifying establishments for shipment throughout the United States.
With the addition of South Dakota, there are nine states participating in the program. The others are Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Vermont and Wisconsin.
State Veterinarian Dr. Dusty Oedekoven says the Animal Industry Broad is excited to help bring the CIS to South Dakota. He says the program gives meat producers and processors another pathway for getting South Dakota products to market.
Oedekoven says under CIS, state-inspected facilities can operate as federally inspected facilities, under specific conditions, and ship products across state lines. Without CIS, a state-inspected facility is limited to sales within its own borders.
Processors interested in the CIS program should contact the Animal Industry Board at 605-773-3321 or visit https://aib.sd.gov/.
