Sturgis officials say they have issued 712 temporary vending licenses as of yesterday (Aug. 8, 2021). That number compares to 603 on the same day last year.
The Public Works Department reports it has hauled 34.4 tons of trash so far – up 6.5-percent over last year.
10,400 official event cups have been delivered to participating outlets so far. Those cups are the only cups allowed in the open container sections of town.
Open container violations continue to be one of the biggest problems downtown.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says officers have issued 281 violations for open containers of alcohol since the rally began. Participants need that special souvenir cup to drink wine and beer in certain downtown areas.
VanDewater says “people hear open container at the Rally and they don’t realize there are rules attached. Once people are stopped, and the process is explained, they are compliant.”
