According to the US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, 81% of South Dakota farms had access to computers in 2021.
This compares to the national average of 67%.
90% of South Dakota farms had internet access in 2021, up 8% from 2019– the last time this data was collected.
Nationally, 67% of farms had a desktop or laptop computer, while 77% of farms had a smartphone. 82% of the farms in the US reported having access to the internet, with 98% paying for that access.
In 2021, 29% of farms used the internet to purchase agricultural inputs, which increased 5% from 2019. Additionally, 21% of farms used the internet to market agricultural activities, increasing 2% from 2019.
In 2021, 50% of internet-connected farms had a broadband connection, while 70% of internet-connected farms had access through a cellular data plan.
USDA collected the data as part of the June Agricultural Survey.
