BROOKINGS – Pierre Governor Soccer swept their final road matches of the season Thursday at the Fishback Soccer complex, with the Governor boys defeating Brookings 3-2 and the girls taking a 5-2 win.
Brookings scored first on a penalty kick by Talon Everding in the eighth minute, and that lead held up for the Bobcats until Cole Peterson scored for Pierre from the the upper right side of the box on a soft shot in the 53rd minute. Peterson gave Pierre a 67th-minute lead after Brookings misplayed a pass in their own end. Peterson’s 17th goal of the season gave Pierre a 2-1 advantage. Rylan Derry scored in the 74th minute to make the Governor lead 3-1, and Pierre turned out to need that goal, because Kole Kalber scored just over four minutes from full time to cut the lead to one. However, Pierre held on to improve to 6-3-1.
In the girls match, Pierre struck quickly, with Ryann Berry putting in a solid right-footed strike from just outside the box in the third minute. Under a minute later, the Governors scored off a corner. Berry’s shot hit the bar, but the rebound went right to Gracelyn Taylor, who scored to make the Pierre lead 2-0. In the 37th minute, a Kammy Kuipers strike from outside the box gave Pierre a third and a 3-0 halftime lead. Berry curled in a left-wing free kick in the 68th minute to make the advantage 4-0 for the Governors. Brookings’ Elise Lefers spoiled Pierre’s shutout bid in the 69th minute. Avery Davis rounded out the Pierre scoring in the 71st minute. Maddix Archer closed the scoring for Brookings in the 74th minute. The Governor girls are now 7-3.
Both teams have their last three regular season matches at home, starting with Yankton Tuesday at the PILC Soccer Complex.
