Corn for grain production in South Dakota based on year-end surveys is estimated at 740 million bushels, up 3% from 2020, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 135 bushels per acre is down 27 bushels from last year. Farmers harvested 5.48 million acres of corn for grain up 23% from 2020.
Corn for silage production is 6.00 million tons, down 7% from 2020. Yield of 12.0 tons per acre is down 6.0 tons from last year. Farmers harvested 500,000 acres, up 39% from 2020. Total acreage planted to corn for all purposes is 6.15 million acres, up 26% from last year.
Soybean production for 2021 totaled 216 million bushels, down 5% from 2020. Yield, at 40.0 bushels per acre, is down 6.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 5.39 million acres, is up 10% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 5.45 million acres, up 10% from last year.
Alfalfa hay production, at 1.95 million tons, is down 40% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 1.50 tons per acre, is down 0.30 ton per acre from 2020. Area harvested, at 1.30 million acres, is down 28% from 2020.
Alfalfa haylage and greenchop at 150,000 tons, is down 44% from a year earlier. Average yield, at 5.00 tons per acre, is up 0.50 ton per acre from 2020 Area harvested, at 30,000 acres, is down 50% from 2020.
Seedings of alfalfa during 2021 totaled 65,000 acres, down 65,000 acres from a year earlier.
All other hay production, at 1.16 million tons, is down 46% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 1.05 tons per acre, is down 0.65 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested, at 1.10 million acres, is down 12% from 2020.
All other haylage and greenchop production, at 134,000 tons, is up 3% from a year earlier. Average yield, at 6.70 tons per acre, is up 0.20 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested, at 20,000 acres, is unchanged from 2020.
Sorghum for grain production in 2021 is estimated at 13.4 million bushels, up 18% from 2020. Yield, at 64.0 bushels per acre, is down 7.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 210,000 acres, is up 31% from 2020.
Sorghum for silage production is 120,000 tons, down 66% from 2020. Yield of 9.2 tons per acre is down 4.8 tons from last year. Farmers harvested 13,000 acres, down 48% from 2020. Total acreage planted to sorghum for all purposes is 310,000 acres, up 48% from last year.
Oil sunflower production in 2021 is 744 million pounds, down 30% from last year. Yield, at 1,600 pounds per acre, is down 300 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 465,000 acres, is down 17% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 485,000 acres, down 15% from last year.
Non-oil sunflower production of 73.8 million pounds is down 28% from last year. Yield, at 2,050 pounds per acre, is up 30 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 36,000 acres, is down 29% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 38,000 acres, down 27% from last year.
Proso millet production in 2021 is estimated at 2.30 million bushels, up 34% from last year’s production. Yield, at 28.0 bushels per acre, is down 7.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 82,000 acres, is up 67% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 95,000 acres, up 76% from last year.
Dry edible pea production is estimated at 131,000 cwt, down 68% from 2020. Yield is estimated at 570 pounds per acre, down 900 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 23,000, down 18% from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 26,000 acres, down 10% from last year.
Safflower production is estimated at 11.3 million pounds, down 32% from 2020. Yield per harvested acre is estimated at 750 pounds, down 500 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 15,000, up 14% from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 16,000 acres, up 3% from last year.
Principal crop area planted totaled 16.7 million acres, up 7% from 2020. Area harvested, at 16.0 million acres, is up 5% from last year. South Dakota principal crop acres include corn, sorghum, oats, barley, rye, winter wheat, other spring wheat, soybeans, sunflower, proso millet, and all hay. Double cropped acres and unharvested small grains planted as cover crops are also included.
