A Sioux Falls man convicted of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender has been sentenced by a federal judge in South Dakota.
38 year old Michael Lovejoy must spend 20 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Lovejoy was convicted of a sex offense in 2003. As a result of this conviction, he is required to register as a sex offender and update his registration within three business days of relocation or changing employment. Between September 28, 2020, and April 29, 2021, Lovejoy failed to properly register as a sex offender and update his registration. Lovejoy registered an address in Elk Point on July 28, 2020. He left that address and ultimately traveled to Eagle Butte, without updating his address. Lovejoy did not properly register for a period of seven months.
This case was investigated by U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case.
