HURON – With ups for Pierre Governors Boys Basketball, there have been downs this season, and in two cases, one-possession losses. But what happened Tuesday may have been the toughest loss for Pierre to take this season.
Huron rallied from a 16-point third quarter deficit, with eighth-grader Blake Ellwein hitting a three-pointer from the right wing with 1.6 seconds left to give the Tigers a 53-52 victory over the Governors at Huron Arena.
Ellwein, the son of Jay Ellwein, who led Huron to the 1993 AA championship, was open for his second three-pointer of the game to give the Tigers their only lead of the night.
Pierre was outscored 24-9 in the fourth quarter, with the Governors being held to only two field goals in the final eight minutes. Pierre (7-8) also was just four-of-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Max Kranzler led Huron with 16 points. Brandon Decker had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Lincoln Kienholz scored 21 points for Pierre. Jackson Edman scored 14 points with eight rebounds and six blocked shots.
The Governors will renew the long-dormant Governor’s Cup series with Bismarck High Friday in North Dakota’s capital. Coverage will begin at 6:30 on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7, and at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app & drgnews.com. With the game being played in North Dakota, it will be played in two 18-minute halves.
