UPDATE APRIL 1, 2022:
A 38 year old Sioux Falls man convicted of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender has been sentenced in federal court.
Cephas Joseph Wood must spend 24 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
The conviction stems from Wood failing to register as a sex offender as required by federal law between September 17, 2021, and November 13, 2021. Wood had previously been convicted of a sex offense in federal court which requires him to register for the rest of his life.
This case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Wood was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
DECEMBER 10, 2021:
A Sioux Falls man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.
37 year old Cephas Joseph Wood pled not guilty.
The Indictment alleges that between September 17, 2021, and November 13, 2021, Wood, a person required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, and a sex offender by reason of a conviction under Federal Law, failed to register and update his registration.
The maximum penalty if convicted is up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, life of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper is prosecuting the case.
Wood was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, which has been set for February 15, 2022.
