Let’s check out some great Feel Good Friday stories for this week…
1. An off-duty firefighter in New York was getting home last week when he saw a house down the street on fire . . . and ended up pulling a three-year-old little girl out. The whole place was full of smoke, but he had a breathing apparatus in his trunk that he takes to Career Day at schools. He says luckily he’d been lazy and left it in his car.
2. A guy in Louisiana pulled over to save a kitten he saw on the side of the road. Then TWELVE MORE ran out of a patch of weeds, so he had to save all 13 of them. He was recording with his phone when it happened, so it’s all on video. It sounds like all the kittens have already been adopted, or will be soon.
3. A 16-year-old from Ohio named Sam Short has been fighting cancer of the spine since 2018. And check out how tough this kid is: When Make-a-Wish reached out, he said he wanted to go to boot camp. Seven Marines trained him for two days. He did obstacle courses, a swim test, and even the final “Crucible” challenge all Marines go through. If he couldn’t do something, they all did it together as a team. And they made him an honorary Marine at the end.
4. An elementary school in Oregon set a new unofficial record for cereal box dominoes. They used 6,877 boxes, and then donated them all to a food bank. They originally planned to get Guinness involved to make it official. But there were time constraints, so they just went for it. They would have beaten the current record by about 500 boxes.
5. A woman in Colorado just marked her 99th birthday by flying around in a glider. It was on her bucket list, so her friends made it happen. She says she loved it.
6. A high school senior in Texas walked up to get his diploma last month. Which was a big deal, because he lost both of his legs as a kid. His name is Kiven Medrano. He was born with a genetic condition, and his legs had to be amputated when he was young. As a freshman, he made it his goal to walk across the stage at graduation one day, and he got prosthetics about a year ago. The crowd gave him a huge ovation. He’s already enrolled in college and plans to pursue a career in animation.
7. A local news anchor in Spokane, Washington named Tim Pham accumulated way too many neckties for work . . . about 250. So he recently started giving them away on social media to young people entering the workforce. “USA Today” just did a story on him, because it’s inspired other people to do it too.
8. A student in Northern Ireland came up with a cool idea called memory boxes. He visited 10 people in hospice, and recorded them telling stories before they passed away. Each wooden box has the person’s name on it . . . the inside looks like an old radio, with a dial to change stations . . . and each station is a different story they told. The first one he did was with his own grandfather in 2018. And he gave it to his mom when the grandad passed away. He says as soon as he saw her reaction, he knew it was something other people might want.
9. A woman in Wisconsin named Fidalia Breunig recently got to celebrate her 100th birthday by riding through town in a fire truck. Her son is a retired fire chief, and she has nieces and nephews who are firefighters. So that’s how she wanted to celebrate. She says the secret to living so long is to “keep busy and keep moving.”
