The 988 Lifeline– the United States’ first nationwide three-digit mental health and substance abuse crisis hotline– was activated over the weekend (July 16, 2022).
South Dakota Department of Social Services Secretary Laurie Gill says 988 operates much like 911 for emergencies, but connects callers to trained counselors rather than law enforcement.
Gill says calling 988 will connect you to behavioral health resources anywhere in South Dakota.
Gill says we need to not only be vigilant about providing assistance, but also making sure the public knows that assistance is available.
The 988 Lifeline also has assistance for people worried about someone having a mental health crisis or substance abuse issues.
