PIERRE – There is considerable doubt about the future of the Expedition League, the collegiate summer baseball league that has featured the Pierre Trappers for the last five seasons.
This season began with only four teams and was reduced to two on July 3 after the North Iowa Ragin’ Roosters and Red River Pilots ended their seasons over a month early. Souris Valley then defeated the Trappers three games to one in the Expedition League Championship Series.
The Trappers’ lease with Hyde Stadium ended with this season, Pierre city officials want to know if there will be a Trapper team or another Pierre team in another league for 2023.
City Administrator Kristi Honeywell put forward a request for proposals Tuesday at the Pierre City Commission meeting.
If there is to be a collegiate team at Hyde Stadium next summer, Honeywell said any deal will have to be done soon.
If there is to be a collegiate team next summer, it will have to make a separate agreement with Post 8.
