PIERRE – From the very first play, Sturgis was no match for Pierre.
The first play Thursday was an 85-yard return of the opening kickoff for a touchdown by Jayden Wiebe, and after that, the Pierre Governors used four touchdown passes and a touchdown run from Lincoln Kienholz to stuff Sturgis 42-14 in the first round of the 11AA playoffs at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium.
All of the scoring for the Governors (10-0) was in the first half, marking an early end of the evening’s work for the first-team offense. Kienholz threw touchdown passes to Brecken Krueger, Jack Merkwan, Jett Zabel and Cade Kaiser as he was 12-of-18 for 154 yards.
Gunner Rohloff had a touchdown run for Sturgis (4-6) and Owen Cass threw a touchdown pass to Jake Vliem.
Pierre will host Yankton on Friday, November 4 in the 11AA semifinal round. The Bucks used six total touchdowns from quarterback Rugby Ryken (three passing, three rushing) to ease past Brookings 49-14 Thursday at Crane-Youngworth Field.
