South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem delivered her 2022 Budget Address today (Dec. 6, 2022), outlining her spending plan for part of Fiscal Year 2023 and all of Fiscal Year 2024.
Noem said South Dakota has a strong economy and the state’s growing population is proof of that.
Noem said South Dakota’s government is small but effective.
The Governor offered to give a 5% funding increase for the state’s “big 3”– education, healthcare providers and state employees.
Noem told legislators “the nation is watching how you in this body make decisions.”
South Dakota currently has $423 million in reserves after ending last year with a record-breaking budget surplus of $115.5 million. But, Noem says she and the legislature must remain conservative because “the people of South Dakota deserve safe planning that protects them from future tax increases or drastic cuts to state services.”
