During the Holiday Season it’s nice to hear these Feel Good Friday stories…
1. A one-eared dog named Van Gogh is raising money for charity by painting with his tongue. He used to be a “bait dog” in a dogfighting ring, which is how he lost the ear. The head a of a rescue place in Connecticut originally used the painting idea as a gimmick to get him adopted. But now he’s done over 60 paintings, and raised more than $3,000 to help rescue other pets.
2. A woman in Philadelphia named Patricia Gallagher is in the news. Every year, she goes to different nursing homes and hands out hundreds of stuffed animals to seniors who might not get a lot of Christmas gifts. They’re all donated by random people, or come from toy drives. She’s been doing it since 2009.
3. A town in Washington raised $2,300 to send a grocery store worker with autism to a Seattle Seahawks game. He’s a huge fan and had front-row seats. But it turned out it was more money than he needed for the trip, so he donated the rest. He gave some to his local Autism Society, and $500 to a food bank.
4. The world’s oldest pen pals just celebrated their 100th birthdays together, and tried Zoom for the first time. He lives in England, and she’s in Texas. They’ve been pen pals since 1938 when they were 16 years old. (Here’s a photo.)
5. A guy in California was working under his truck last month when it fell on him. But luckily, his 15-year-old son was able to lift the truck just enough, and a security camera got it on video. The dad ended up with some broken ribs, a separated shoulder, and a punctured lung, but should make a full recovery.
6. Some Home Depot workers near Nashville found an envelope in the middle of an aisle with $700 in it, and tracked down the rightful owner on Facebook. It turned out it was money for his kids’ Christmas gifts.
7. Cops and firefighters in Nevada worked together to save a wild donkey that wandered into an old mine shaft, and got stuck in a ten-foot hole. A hiker spotted it and called it in last Thursday. Rescuers had to scale a mountain with all their gear to get to it. Then they spent hours hoisting it out, and released it. It was hungry and dehydrated, but wasn’t hurt.
8. The city of Kingston, Ontario in Canada just finished up its annual “Toys for Tickets” campaign. Anyone who got a parking ticket between November 1st and December 3rd could avoid paying by donating a toy instead. Since 2005, they’ve collected more than 3,600 toys to hand out to kids over the holidays. And a lot of cities here are doing it this year too, everywhere from Las Vegas to Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
9. A pack of coyotes attacked a flock of sheep in Decatur, Georgia last month. But a sheepdog named Casper fought them all off, and took down eight coyotes all by himself. Casper works on John Wierwiller’s farm. Wierwiller said Casper fought off more than half a dozen coyotes to protect his flock. The fight lasted for half an hour, Casper’s owner said. Now people have donated over $15,000 to cover his vet bills.
10. A guy in Australia just returned a library book that was 119 years overdue. His grandfather checked it out in 1903. It’s an early copy of “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens, still in excellent condition.
