Next week (Jan. 9, 2023), Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy Benjamin Harris and Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes Elizabeth Rosenberg will each travel to Europe to meet with government counterparts and discuss continued coordination with allies on economic measures against Russia for its unjust war in Ukraine. Throughout the conflict, the coalition of countries imposing sanctions and export controls has remained unified in leveling some of the broadest and most impactful actions in history.
The officials will meet with European allies to discuss continued efforts to deny Putin the revenue he needs to pursue his war, as well as additional steps to further disrupt Russia’s military supply chains. Sanctions and export controls from this historic coalition have denied Russia the inputs they need to equip their troops and replace equipment lost on the battlefield, forcing the Kremlin to rely on suppliers of last-resort like North Korea and Iran. While in Europe, Assistant Secretary Harris and Assistant Secretary Rosenberg will also discuss with counterparts the implementation of Russia energy price caps and consult on the functioning of the price cap on Russian oil, which senior Russian economic officials have openly acknowledged is hurting their ability to fund their illegal war.
From January 8th to 13th, Assistant Secretary Harris will visit Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland to meet with government counterparts.
From January 8th to 10th, Assistant Secretary Rosenberg will be in Brussels, Belgium to meet with European Union counterparts.
