Corn for grain production in South Dakota based on year-end surveys is estimated at 661 million bushels, down 10% from 2021, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 132 bushels per acre is down 2 bushels from last year. Farmers harvested 5.01 million acres of corn for grain down 9% from 2021.
Corn for silage production is 6.60 million tons, up 10% from 2021. Yield of 12.0 tons per acre is unchanged from last year. Farmers harvested 550,000 acres, up 10% from 2021. Total acreage planted to corn for all purposes is 5.75 million acres, down 7% from last year.
Soybean production for 2022 totaled 193 million bushels, down 11% from 2021. Yield, at 38.0 bushels per acre, is down 2.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 5.07 million acres, is down 6% from 2021. Total acreage planted is 5.10 million acres, down 6% from last year.
Alfalfa hay production, at 2.81 million tons, is up 44% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 1.70 tons per acre, is up 0.20 ton per acre from 2021. Area harvested, at 1.65 million acres, is up 27% from 2021. Alfalfa haylage and greenchop at 210,000 tons, is up 40% from a year earlier. Average yield, at 6.00 tons per acre, is up 1.00 ton per acre from 2021. Area harvested, at 35,000 acres, is up 17% from 2021. Seedings of alfalfa during 2022 totaled 70,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from the year earlier.
All other hay production, at 1.76 million tons, is up 52% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 1.35 tons per acre, is up 0.30 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested, at 1.30 million acres, is up 18% from 2021. All other haylage and greenchop production, at 102,000 tons, is down 24% from a year earlier. Average yield, at 6.80 tons per acre, is up 0.10 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested, at 15,000 acres, is down 25% from 2021.
Sorghum for grain production in 2022 is estimated at 11.9 million bushels, down 11% from 2021. Yield, at 68.0 bushels per acre, is up 4.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 175,000 acres, is down 17% from 2021. Sorghum for silage production is 651,000 tons, up 443% from 2021. Yield of 9.0 tons per acre is up 0.1 ton from last year. Farmers harvested 70,000 acres, up 438% from 2021. Total acreage planted to sorghum for all purposes is 280,000 acres, down 10% from last year.
Oil sunflower production in 2022 is 1.01 billion pounds, up 36% from last year. Yield, at 1,740 pounds per acre, is up 140 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 580,000 acres, is up 25% from 2021. Total acreage planted is 610,000 acres, up 26% from last year.
Non-oil sunflower production of 73.2 million pounds is down 1% from last year. Yield, at 1,830 pounds per acre, is down 220 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 40,000 acres, is up 11% from 2021. Total acreage planted is 42,000 acres, up 11% from last year.
Proso millet production in 2022 is estimated at 1.11 million bushels, down 50% from last year’s production. Yield, at 30.0 bushels per acre, is up 2.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 37,000 acres, is down 54% from 2021. Total acreage planted is 47,000 acres, down 51% from last year.
Dry edible pea production is estimated at 300,000 cwt, up 129% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2,140 pounds per acre, up 1,570 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 14,000, down 39% from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 14,000 acres, down 46% from last year.
Safflower production is estimated at 12.8 million pounds, up 24% from 2021. Yield per harvested acre is estimated at 800 pounds, up 50 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 16,000, up 16% from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 17,700 acres, up 11% from last year.
Principal crop area planted totaled 16.6 million acres, down slightly from 2021. Area harvested, at 16.0 million acres, is up slightly from last year. South Dakota principal crop acres include corn, sorghum, oats, barley, rye, winter wheat, other spring wheat, soybeans, sunflower, proso millet, and all hay. Double cropped acres and unharvested small grains planted as cover crops are also included.
