One of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s most prominent re-election campaign promises from last year (2022) is scheduled to see committee action this morning (Jan. 26, 2023).
House Bill 1075 repeals the state sales tax on most grocery food items. The House Taxation Committee is slated to hear the bill at 7:45 a.m. (CT)
The Joint Appropriations Committee meets at 9 a.m. They will consider several bills to expand the South Dakota National Guard’s facilities in Sioux Falls.
At 10 a.m., the Senate Commerce and Energy Committee is set to hear a bill that would increase petroleum pipeline inspection and regulation by the state. (HB 1005)
The same committee is also scheduled to hear a resolution asking the Legislature’s Executive Board to issue a summer study committee on the feasibility of nuclear energy. (SCR 601)
At 1 p.m., both the House and Senate are scheduled to convene. The upper chamber is scheduled to debate a bill requiring law enforcement to contact school officials if the authorities investigate a student for drug or alcohol violations or for violence. (SB 3)
Today is the 12th day of the 38-day session. Legislators are off tomorrow and will work all five days next week.
