FULL STORY: Original Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington passed away. He was 71 years old.
Rossington was the longest-serving member of the band, and the last original member. The band said, quote, “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does.”
Gary had writing credits on several of Skynyrd’s classic tracks, including “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Simple Man”, “What’s Your Name”, “Don’t Ask Me No Questions”, “Gimme Back My Bullets”, and “Things Goin’ On”.
Rossington suffered serious injuries in the 1977 plane crash that killed several of his bandmates and put Skynyrd on hiatus for a decade. Before they reunited, he formed and played in the underrated Rossington Collins Band.
Rossington suffered a heart attack in 2015 and had emergency surgery in 2021 . . . but he continued playing in the band up until his death. (Consequence)
