SIOUX FALLS – Pierre started well in the AA championship game, but a second-quarter surge gave Sioux Falls Washington another championship.
Washington won its second championship in three years Saturday with a 54-36 victory over Pierre in the SDHSAA Class AA Girls Basketball championship game at the Sanford Pentagon.
The game turned for Washington when the Warriors, who had trailed the Governors early by five points, put together an 18-3 run in the last 5:53 of the first half for a 31-20 halftime lead.
Brooklyn Harpe led Washington (21-3) with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including a three-pointer. Grace Peterson scored 13 points with six rebounds.
Ryann Barry scored 12 points for Pierre (20-4) and made three three-pointers. Remington Price, one of six Governor seniors playing their final games, scored eight points with two three-pointers.
Pierre was held to 26 percent shooting, its lowest percentage of the season. Washington shot 41 percent and outrebounded Pierre 38-30.
Washington, who defeated Pierre 57-49 on January 7, won its seventh overall girls state championship. Pierre was trying for its third.
Price ended her Governor career as the program’s fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,128 points. She made 202 career three-pointers, the most ever for a Pierre girls player, and one short of the boys record set by Lane Severyn. Her second three-pointer Saturday was her 61st of the season, also a program record.
Price and Reese Terwilliger, who scored 19 points in a Friday semifinal win over Harrisburg, were named to the all-tournament team.
