Sunday afternoon (May 21, 2023), around 4:14 pm, the Watertown Police Department to a two-vehicle crash on S.D. Highway 20 near the intersection of Airport Drive. A South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper was conducting a traffic stop when a 91-year-old male from Henry, driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, struck the patrol car.
The Silverado was traveling west in the outside lane of traffic on Highway 20 before the crash and failed to move over for the stopped emergency vehicle. The driver of that vehicle pulled over immediately after the collision and remained at the scene.
The SDHP patrol vehicle, a 2019 Chevy Tahoe K1500 Police, was stopped on the outside (North) shoulder of the roadway for westbound traffic before the crash with its rear-facing amber light bar activated to direct incoming traffic to move over and proceed cautiously. The trooper and the driver from the traffic stop were seated inside the SDHP patrol vehicle at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported by anyone involved.
The SDHP patrol vehicle and the Chevy Silverado sustained functional damage, and the damage estimate for each vehicle is listed at $6,500.
The driver of the 2013 Chevy Silverado was charged with Causing an Accident-Stopped Emergency Vehicle and Driving without a Valid License.
