Some runners may not remember winning a race because of adrenaline. Others may not because they were KNOCKED OUT COLD while chasing after cheese.
You may have heard about the Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake. It’s an annual event in England, where people race down a VERY steep, 200-yard-long hill . . . chasing a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. This year’s event happened yesterday, and a 19-year-old Canadian named Delaney Irving won the women’s race, despite falling and being knocked unconscious on her way down, and rolling across the finish line.
Delaney didn’t realize she won until later, when she woke up in the medical tent. She said, “I remember running, then bumping my head, and then I woke up in the tent . . . I still don’t really believe it, but it feels great.” It’s an extreme event, so injuries aren’t uncommon . . . but winning while unconscious is unusual.
