The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has updated the South Dakota Hazard Mitigation Plan to minimize the impact of floods, winter storms, wildfires and other natural hazards in 2024.
The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management has made the plan available for public review and comment from December 18 through December 31, 2023.
The plan assesses risks posed by natural hazards, identifies ways to reduce those risks, and enables the state to be eligible for mitigation grant funding from FEMA. Updated every five years, this plan is designed to meet Enhanced Plan requirements – which allows South Dakota to be eligible for increased mitigation funding should a natural hazard occur. This directly benefits our local governments.
A State Hazard Mitigation Planning Team, including representatives from multiple state agencies and stakeholders, developed the plan over the past 12 months. The plan identifies and outlines strategies the state will use to decrease our vulnerability to natural hazards and increase our resiliency. The state is now soliciting public comment on the plan before it is finalized and submitted to FEMA for review and approval.

The comment period will be December 18 through December 31, 2023. The plan and online comment form can be accessed at the following website: https://arcg.is/1eLPjb0. Hardcopies can be available for review upon request.
