JANUARY 11, 2024:
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s son is headed back to court for an arraignment on federal tax charges filed after the collapse of a plea deal that could have settled the case against him. Hunter Biden is expected to plead not guilty on Thursday (Jan. 11, 2024) to felony and misdemeanor tax offenses. The charges stem from what federal prosecutors say was a four-year scheme to skip out on paying the $1.4 million he owed to the Internal Revenue Service. Prosecutors say he instead spent millions to fund an extravagant lifestyle that by his own admission included drugs and alcohol.
JAUARY 5, 2024:
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans plan to move forward next week with holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress after President Joe Biden’s son defied a congressional subpoena to appear for a private deposition last month (Dec. 2023). The Republicans who lead the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and the Judiciary Committee announced Friday that they will hold votes on contempt charges against Hunter Biden as the GOP moves into the final stages of its impeachment inquiry. If the committees approve the charges, the full House would get a final vote. Hunter Biden has slammed the GOP-issued subpoena for closed-door testimony and has insisted he’d only testify in public.
DECEMBER 13, 2023:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden has defied a congressional subpoena to appear privately for a deposition before Republican investigators who have been digging into his business dealings. Biden insisted outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2023) that he will only testify in public. The Democratic president’s son slammed his subpoena for closed-door testimony. Rep. James Comer of Kentucky is the chairman of the House Oversight Committee and has said Republicans expect “full cooperation” with their original demand for a private deposition. Hunter Biden lives in California and says he’s in Washington to testify at a public hearing. Biden asks what Republicans are afraid of.
DECEMBER 8, 2023:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden has been indicted on nine tax charges in California as a special counsel investigation into the business dealings of President Joe Biden’s son intensifies against the backdrop of the looming 2024 election. The indictment Thursday (Dec. 7, 2023) includes three felonies and six misdemeanors. Special counsel David Weiss says Hunter Biden “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills.” Defense attorney Abbe Lowell argues prosecutors bowed to political pressure in the case, which had been expected to end with a plea deal before it imploded over the summer. The new charges are in addition to federal firearms charges in Delaware alleging Hunter Biden broke laws against drug users having guns in 2018.
JULY 26, 2023:
WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has arrived at a Delaware court to appear before a federal judge and is expected to plead guilty to two tax crimes and admit possessing a gun as a drug user. The anticipated pleas Wednesday (July 26, 2023) are part of a deal with the Justice Department that’ll likely spare Hunter Biden time behind bars. U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika was appointed by then-President Donald Trump and will preside over the hearing. The judge must sign off on the deal, in which prosecutors will recommend two years of probation. The deal was announced last month and ended a long-running Justice Department investigation into the taxes and foreign business dealings of the president’s second son.
