The South Dakota National Guard’s 82nd Civil Support Team (CST) teamed up with local authorities and the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) Emergency Response Team (ERT) for a combined training exercise that included a mock chemical scenario to find a missing team member underground in Lead, S.D., September 2023. The scenario was designed to test their response time, ability to maneuver and perform rescues underground in a confined space to remain a ready and capable team. Opportunities like these provide valuable training for Soldiers and Airmen and increased relationships within the community. The South Dakota National Guard is an elite organization of community-based citizen-warriors who stand ready to serve the state and nation at any moment. Courtesy photo by Stephen Kenny.
