MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota man who once fought for the Islamic State group in Syria after becoming radicalized expressed remorse and wept in court as he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Abelhamid Al-Madioum cooperated with federal authorities ahead of Thursday’s (June 13, 2024) open court hearing. Prosecutors factored into their recommendation a lower sentence than the statutory maximum of 20 years. The 27-year-old was among several Minnesotans suspected of leaving the U.S. to join the Islamic State group. U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery says Al-Madioum’s case is extraordinary. She cited his confounding path from a loving Minnesota home to one of the world’s most notorious terror organizations.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota man who once fought for the Islamic State group in Syria but now expresses remorse and has been cooperating with authorities will learn Wednesday how much prison time he faces. Federal prosecutors have recommended 12 years for Abelhamid Al-Madioum in recognition of both the seriousness of his crime and the help has he given the U.S. and other governments. His attorney says seven years is enough. Al-Madioum was 18 when IS recruited him in 2014. He returned to the U.S. in 2020 and pleaded guilty in 2021 to providing material support to a designated terrorist organization.
