JUNE 26, 2024:
The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management is collecting information from residents and businesses that have experienced flood related damage.
Governor Kristi Noem says nearly half of the counties in the state have been affected in some way.
During a news conference late Tuesday afternoon (July 25, 2024) in Yankton, Noem said the water there is slowly receding.
Noem says forecasted water levels in the James, Big Sioux, Vermillion and Missouri rivers all looked better Tuesday afternoon than when the flooding started late last week.
Noem says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been doing what they can to ease the situation from Yankton, up and down the Missouri River.
So far, the Corps has not used the Oahe Dam to try to help alleviate flooding along the Missouri River, but John Remus, chief of the Corp’s Missouri River Water Management Division, said earlier this week (June 24, 2024) some adjustments may happen.
Information provided by residents and businesses will be used to seek a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Individual Assistance and a Small Business Administration Rural Agency Disaster Declaration.
