In an extraordinary act of generosity and community support, Charles Howe has donated $250,000 to Mobridge Regional Health Care Foundation, in honor of his wife, Dale Howe. The funds will help pay for the construction and renovation of the region’s vital critical access hospital in Mobridge, SD.
This remarkable contribution, announced today by Mobridge Regional Health Care Foundation, underscores the Howe family’s deep commitment to local communities and our regional healthcare system. Charles’ uncle helped build the original hospital over 65 years ago, giving the donation additional meaning. “Mobridge Regional Hospital plays a crucial role in our community, providing essential healthcare services to our neighbors and families,” said Howe. “I am honored to support their mission and contribute to the well-being of our community members.”
Growing up on his father’s farm, Charles was always excited to help plant the new varieties of grains released annually by South Dakota State University. When he and his wife Dale started farming, they continued to plant some of the new varieties each year. Eventually, this led them into the seed business. They founded Howe Seeds, Inc. and were supported by the region’s agricultural producers for many years. It was those years of support which motivated them to give back to area residents through this donation to MRH&C.
The donation comes at a pivotal time for Mobridge Regional Hospital, which has had to tighten its capital budget due to building project costs, exacerbated by rising interest rates and inflation over the last several years. The new patient wing, with its updated obstetrics unit, in-patient rooms, and nurses’ station opened earlier this year. The new surgery suite and infusion center will be completed next. By the end of the project, the radiology department will be fully renovated, and Mobridge Medical Clinic will offer adequate space for everyday care and additional visiting specialists.
This infusion of funds will also enable the hospital to continue upgrading existing equipment, expanding services, and supporting staff trainings through the construction phase and beyond, increasing the organization’s capacity to provide essential medical care and improve patient outcomes. “We are profoundly grateful to the Howe family for this transformative donation,” expressed John J. Ayoub, CEO of Mobridge Regional Hospital and Clinics. “This generous gift will have a lasting impact on our ability to serve our patients with excellence and compassion.”
