We’ve gathered some positive and uplifting stories from the past week.
1. A 22-year-old pilot flew from New Mexico to D.C. last week . . . which is impressive when you find out she’s legally blind. She had a co-pilot with her to navigate. She did it for World Sight Day, and to inspire other visually impaired people to never let it limit what they do in life.
2. A woman in Brazil gave birth in an elevator last month after she couldn’t make it to the hospital in time. But it’s all good, because her husband who was with her happens to be an OBGYN, who’s delivered more than 5,000 babies. She and their new daughter are doing great.
3. A cocker spaniel named George just won “Animal of the Year” in England for his unique talents as a therapy dog. He’s really good at just sitting and listening to people very intently. So his owner uses him to help kids learn to read out loud. They say he listens, but doesn’t judge.
4. A team of students, also known as the GreenTeam, just broke a Guinness World Record for accelerating their electric vehicle from 0-62 mph in 1.461 seconds. The car they built earned the Guinness World Record for fasted accelerating electric vehicle. “Roughly equivalent to the force experienced by astronauts when a rocket re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere,” the university announced. The GreenTeam had previously held the same record but with the time of 2.681 seconds, but has been broken a number of times.
5. A pregnant firefighter in Maryland named Megan Warfield was in a car crash this month, and it made her go into labor. But she still got out and helped another crash victim before going to the hospital. Her boyfriend who’s a paramedic was also one of the first people on scene. Hours later, they welcomed a healthy baby girl named Charlotte.
6. A couple from Rhode Island was honeymooning in Spain and walking around Barcelona when they saw a building on fire. So the husband ran inside . . . realized it was a nursery . . . and helped get more than a dozen babies out.
7. An 11-year-old kid in the U.K. started his own foodbank two years ago and collects things like canned goods to hand out. It’s going so well, he’s hoping to open a second foodbank location next month.
8. A 20-year-old from New Zealand didn’t have anyone to jam with during the covid lockdowns. So he taught his dad to play bass, and his mom to play drums. Now they’ve got a band called Mommas Boy, and recently put out their first album called “Who Would Have Thought”.
9. A café in England has a new sliding price scale based on how polite you are. If you say “hello” AND “please” when you order, you pay around $2 for a chai tea. If you say “please” but NOT “hello,” it costs a little more. And if you just walk up and say “chai tea,” you pay around $5.50 for the same drink.
10. A farmer in Minnesota was in a bad crash back in August when he swerved to avoid a puppy that ran out into the road. And he’s still so banged up, he couldn’t harvest his crops this month. So he wasn’t sure what he’d do. But then more than a dozen farmers from around the area showed up with their own combines and trucks, and harvested his entire crop for him. They also did the same thing 11 years ago after his dad passed away during harvest season.
11. In 2013, an Irish guy was in New York and didn’t have enough to cover his cab fare. So he gave his cabbie an I.O.U. for two pints of Guinness if he ever came to his family’s pub in Dublin. And nine years later, the cabbie just took him up on it.
