JANUARY 4, 2023, 5PM UPDATE:
Interstate 90 has been reopened westbound from Sioux Falls to Mitchell as of 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023.
I-90 travel conditions:
Although I-90 is now reopened (eastbound and westbound) across the state, travelers should expect to encounter difficult driving conditions including narrow driving lanes, ice-covered roads, and snow-covered shoulders. Continual drifting is occurring due to the high accumulation of snow and sustained winds. Many on and off-ramps, along with the local crossroads at interchanges, remain impassable due to deep snow drifts.
Snow removal equipment will be working to remove snow and ice in the driving lanes and on the shoulders over the next few days. Please use extra caution and reduce travel speed as the clean-up continues.
No Travel Advisories remain in effect for state highways in the central and southeastern areas of South Dakota where the greatest snowfall totals were received in this storm system.

Interstate 90 (eastbound and westbound) will remain closed overnight from Chamberlain (exit 265) to Sioux Falls (Marion Road/exit 395) due to significant snow accumulation and multiple stranded vehicles blocking lanes of traffic. Clean-up has been extremely slow due to the large number of vehicles that are stuck and stranded on I-90. Clean-up will completed during the morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023.

State Highways:
No Travel Advisories remain in place on state highways across the central and southeastern portion of South Dakota, with many highways physically impassable from blockages of large snow drifts and stranded vehicles. JANUARY 3, 2023:
Due to accumulating heavy snow and sustained high winds causing blizzard-like conditions and extensive drifting, Interstate 90 has been closed (eastbound and westbound) from Chamberlain (exit 265) to Sioux Falls (Marion Road/exit 395) and Interstate 29 (northbound and southbound) has been closed from the I-29/I-90 Interchange in Sioux Falls to Brookings (exit 132) as of 8:45am CT today (Jan. 3, 2023).
SDDOT snow plows are having difficulty clearing roads due to near zero visibility and accumulating snow, with some plows becoming stuck with the high accumulation of snow on the lanes of traffic.
SDDOT anticipates the I-90 and I-29 closures to remain in place throughout the day. Conditions are expected to improve this afternoon. Officials will continually assess conditions to determine when I-90 and I-29 can be reopened safely.
No Travel Advisories are also in place for numerous state highways in the central and southeastern portion of South Dakota, with some becoming impassable.
Motorists are asked to avoid travel as blizzard-like conditions are making travel hazardous.
