PIERRE – The streak continues, and it gives Pierre a chance for a state championship.
Pierre Governor Baseball won the Class A Region 1 tournament Saturday at Hyde Stadium, defeating Douglas 20-0 in a semifinal game and Sioux Falls Lincoln 4-1 for the regional championship and extending Pierre’s winning streak to 12 after the Governors had lost their first five games of the season.
In the championship game against Lincoln, Lincoln Kienholz struck out nine in five innings, allowing a run and five hits for the win. JJ Bucholz pitched the last two innings for the save.
Lincoln scored first in the top of the first inning, but Pierre answered in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Brecken Krueger. Krueger drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the second inning. Jonny Lyons’ RBI double in the fifth inning extended the Pierre lead to 3-1. Deegan Houska stole home in the sixth for the Governors’ final run. Houska had two of Pierre’s five hits.
Pierre scored three in the first against Douglas, then had a 14-run second inning and a three-run third, winning by run rule in the fifth. Jett Zabel had a two-run triple and three RBI. Kienholz, Krueger, Lyons, Cade Kaiser and Spencer Easland drove in two runs each.
Pierre will play on Saturday, May 27 at the SDHSBA Class A state tournament at Sioux Falls Stadium in the second game against Brandon Valley. A win for Pierre would put the Governors against the Harrisburg-Sioux Falls Jefferson winner for the state championship. Pierre has never won an SDHSBA championship.
