BRANDON – The stellar play of Jake Olson helped give Watertown a five-decade first.
Olson shot 66 on Tuesday to lead Watertown to the SDHSAA Class AA Boys Golf State Championship at Brandon Golf Course, the Arrows’ first boys golf state title since 1971.
Watertown finished at 10-over 578, five shots ahead of O’Gorman. Pierre was third with 600.
Olson, a senior, won his second individual championship in three seasons with ease, finishing at seven-under 135, six shots ahead of Taten Mauney of O’Gorman.
Pierre improved by 22 shots from Monday’s 311 to Tuesday’s 289. Nick Bothun of the Governors had the day’s second best round, a 69, to finish tied for eighth individually at six-over 148. Luke Olson shot 70 Tuesday and came 10th with 149. Lincoln Houska tied for 11th at 150 after a 74 on Tuesday. Sawyer Sonnenschein ended tied for 18th at 153 after shooting 76 in his final round. Jack Bartlett shot 163 (83 Tuesday) and Charlie Simpson ended at 164 (84 Tuesday).
