South Dakota corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2023, totaled 730 million bushels, up 23% from 2022, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Of the total, 480 million bushels are stored on farms, up 23% from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 250 million bushels, are up 23% from last year.
Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 172 million bushels, up 27% from last year. On-farm stocks of 75.0 million bushels are up 29% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 96.6 million bushels, are up 25% from 2022.
All wheat stored in all positions totaled 43.8 million bushels, down slightly from a year ago. Onfarm stocks of 22.0 million bushels are up 10% from 2022, and off-farm stocks of 21.8 million bushels are down 9% from last year.
Oats stocks totaled 6.32 million bushels, up 20% from last year. On-farm stocks, at 4.50 million bushels, are up 10% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 1.82 million bushels, are up 54%
from 2022.
Barley stored in all positions totaled 270,000 bushels. On-farm stocks of 250,000 bushels are up 39% from a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 20,000 bushels.
Sorghum off-farm stocks totaled 9.74 million bushels up 98% from 2022.
Hay stocks on South Dakota farms totaled 5.40 million tons on December 1, 2023, up 24% from a year earlier.
Grain storage capacity in South Dakota totaled 1.19 billion bushels, unchanged bushels from December 1, 2022. Total grain storage capacity is comprised of 740 million bushels of on-farm storage, unchanged from last year, and 445 million bushels of off-farm storage, unchanged bushels from 2022.
