PIERRE – For Homecoming, the Pierre Governors will host the slumping Mitchell Kernels Friday at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium. Pierre is 4-2 after a tough 21-14 loss last week at Brookings. Mitchell, after winning their first three games, has lost four in a row. The Kernels lost at Sturgis last week 42-20.
Pierre Head Coach Steve Steele looked back on the Brookings game.
Steele said that the parity of 11AA should be further proved in postseason.
Wide receiver Zach Letellier is out with a shoulder injury suffered against Huron. Steele was asked what the chances are of Letellier returning for the playoffs.
Steele described the unusual injury Letellier suffered.
Steele said that Mitchell will likely emphasize its ground game.
Steele said that the Kernel defense tends to crowd the line of scrimmage.
Steele said that the Governors continue to strive to have the offense not depend so much upon running back Maguire Raske.
Pierre has won four straight and nine of its last 11 games over Mitchell, including two last season, a 75-7 win in the regular season at Mitchell and a 57-7 win in the 11AA semifinal in Pierre.
The Governors and Kernels can be heard Friday night at 6:30 on the official voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7, with Brian Oakland. Live and archived video will be available through the River 92.7 page at drgnews.com.
