MAY 2022:
A federal judge has handed out the punishment to a McLaughlin woman convicted of Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer.
44 year old Valerie Red Fish was sentenced to eight months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on May 27, 2020, in McLaughlin, in which Red Fish assaulted a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer by spitting on the officer while she was performing her official duties.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services, Standing Rock Agency.
Red Fish was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
APRIL 2021:
A 43 year old McLaughlin woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault of a Federal Officer.
Valerie Red Fish pled not guilty.
The Indictment alleges that on May 27, 2020, in McLaughlin, Red Fish assaulted a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer by spitting on her while she was performing her official duties.
The maximum penalty if convicted is eight years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release and restitution may be ordered.
Red Fish was released on conditions pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
