WATERTOWN, SD (KXLG)- Technology now standard on most new vehicles has the potential to prevent 40 percent of crashes and save nearly 9,500 lives annually if used correctly. That’s according to a recent Triple A Foundation for Traffic Safety study.
Blind spot monitoring systems, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist are included on all 2019 models offered by the most manufacturers.
Marilyn Buskohl with Triple A South Dakota says many offered these featured in their earlier models.
She’s hopeful car dealers will educate their customers about the benefits and limitations of these safety systems.
She says preventing 40 percent of crashes and 30 percent of traffic deaths are big numbers.
As part of its ongoing traffic safety mission, new AAA Foundation research evaluated the potential these popular advanced driver assistance technologies have in helping to reduce or prevent crashes. The findings show that, if installed on all vehicles, they can potentially prevent more than 2.7 million crashes, 1.1 million injuries and nearly 9,500 deaths each year.
