BROOKINGS – At the start of back-to-back games, Pierre Governor Boys Basketball wanted sharp and efficient play and received both on Thursday.
Lincoln Kienholz had 22 points and seven rebounds as Pierre gradually pulled away in a 71-45 win over Brookings at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.
Jett Zabel, starting in place of the injured Jackson Edman, scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds. Matthew Hanson and Christian Busch also scored nine each.
Brookings (1-14) played well early and had the lead in the early part of the second quarter before the Governors (8-9) took control, taking a 10-point halftime lead on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jack Merkwan, who scored eight points. Pierre shot 58 percent from the floor and made seven of 10 three-pointers in giving the Bobcats their 13th straight loss.
Pierre will host Watertown Friday at the Riggs High Gym. Coverage will begin at 6:30 on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7, and on the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app and drgnews.com.
