PIERRE – Three wrestlers, Sydney Uhrig and Noah & Nate Williams, are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 12.
Uhrig, set for the upcoming state tournament, was lauded by her head coach, Matt Thorson: “Sydney is currently ranked 2nd in the state at 106 pounds and is going into the state tournament wrestling better than she ever has. Sydney has compiled a record of 30-7 this year and is gaining experience and knowledge with every match. She has been a very valuable teammate and is always looking to help other girls out in practice and at matches to give them an edge. It’s been great to see her develop into the wrestler she has become.”
Noah, at 120 pounds, and Nate, at 126, are both state tournament qualifiers. Boys Wrestling Head Coach Shawn Lewis said, “They have been a staple in the lower weights for the team for the last couple of years and the Williams family name for over a decade. This team goes and the Williams twins go, when they win, we win. This was the case in our Senior Night dual versus Mitchell. Both earned hard fought wins over up and coming Mitchell wrestlers. This secured the dual and a Senior Night sweep for the Governor seniors. The coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of the years and effort that they have given to the program. From Noah’s infectious smile to Nate’s unmatched determination, they will be missed after the year in Governor Green. Thanks for everything, boys!”
