The Pierre City Commission has taken the first step toward securing the dollars needed to build the proposed $37-million water treatment facility voters approved earlier this month (June 5).
The commission heard the first reading of an ordinance to increase water rates, which utility director Brad Palmer says would go up by about $4 per month, per customer when averaged out over the year.
Palmer says this the first of several rate increases that will be used to fund the building and maintenance of the water treatment plant.
Palmer says the design process has begun.
A public hearing for the proposed water rate increase will be held at the June 26 Pierre City Commission meeting. If approved, the rate increase will go into effect in July.
