The Pierre City Commission has approved an increase in water rates.
Utility director Brad Palmer says the increase is needed to help come up with the dollars needed for the city to get a loan to build a new, ultrafiltration water treatment facility.
Palmer says the design process for the proposed $37-million facility voters approved earlier this month (June 5) is underway.
Palmer says when averaged out over a year, customers will see an increase of about $4 per month. He says the actual increase will vary depending on individual water use. Things such as lawn and garden watering or filling a pool or hot tub affect water usage and will be reflected beginning with the August billing.
