PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Post 8 American Legion Junior Legion baseball team went 2 and 1 in a tournament in Sioux Falls over the weekend. The Pierre Junior Legion opened the weekend with a 12-7 loss to Sandhills Publishing of Scottsbluff, Neb. on Friday in their first game. Andrew Coverdale went 5 innings on the mound for Pierre but did not figure in the decision as the Nebraska squad scored 4 runs in the 6th and 4 more runs in the 7th. On Saturday, the Post 8 Junior Legion won twice as they downed the Apple Valley, Minnesota, Junior 76ers by a 11-3 count. Pierre banged out 14 hits in the game and Jack Van Camp was the winning pitcher. In the second and final game of the tournament for Pierre they downed the American Legion Vets Northeast squad 16-5 in 5 innings. Again, Pierre bats were loud as they had 12 hits on the game led by Andy Bierne’s 3 hit game and Cobey Carr who had 5 RBI’s. Josh Rowse and AJ Goeden combined on a 1 hitter for Pierre. The Junior Legion squad improved to 9 and 9 on the season as they return to action on Saturday when they play the Pierre U16 squad in a doubleheader at Kelley Field scheduled to begin at 5 pm.
