A US Department of Housing and Urban Development rule requiring all federally-owned public housing to become smoke free goes into effect today (July 30).
Senior director of health promotions for the American Lung Association Pat McKone says secondhand smoke is a serious health threat. She says it can linger in rooms and travel between homes in multi-unit housing.
McKone says this rule will protect close to two million Americans nationwide, including 690,000 children, from being exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes.
HUD announced the rule in November 2016.
