PIERRE, S.D. – Practices for several Pierre Riggs High School fall sports teams got underway earlier this week. Included in the sports that have begun their season is Governor and Lady Governor soccer. The Lady Gov soccer program is coming off it’s best year since the inception of the program winning the State Class AA State Championship last season. Sydney Zanin returns as head coach of the Lady Govs and he says that despite the success of last season, this season is looking very optimistic to making another run at the title.
The Lady Govs will not have Joanna Zanin, the schools all time leading scorer who has gone on to USD to play college soccer, but coach Zanin says that the returning cast is solid led by senior Emily Mikkelsen.
Being the defending state champion means the team will have a target on their back this year and everybody on the schedule will give Pierre their best shot. Coach Zanin says the girls seem to know that already.
And while coach Zanin feels good with the offense that Pierre will put on the field, defensivly he says the team should be better than last year.
The Lady Govs will open their season a week from tomorrow (Friday Aug. 10) when they host Brandon Valley at the Pierre Indian Learning Center soccer fields in the first of a 12 match varsity schedule.
