The “Warrior of the Month” award was created as a way to recognize students involved in athletics, fine arts and other extracurricular activities at T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre. The award is presented in partnership with the South Dakota National Guard. All individuals nominated are then voted on by the Pierre School District Staff by taking into consideration students’ character, citizenship and grades. Congratulations to Keith Boardman, Abby Farris, Marcus Mancuso, Lacey High Elk and Tanisha Davis for being chosen as September’s “Warriors of the Month.”
Here is the nomination:

TF Riggs congratulates the October nominees for their hard work and commitment in their respected areas:
Kayla Peplinksi (Oral Interp): As a senior this is only Kayla’s second year in oral interp, but she started out the season with big goals. Kayla has done a fantastic job of graciously accepting any and all feedback with a smile and taking risks by making big changes to her piece during the season. Kayla’s hard work paid off this past weekend when she placed well at the Aberdeen meet and earned the first place award in the serious reading category at the Pierre meet. By having clear goals, defying odds stacked against her and putting in the work to make success a reality, Kayla not only vividly portrays the fictional life of Ada, a girl overcoming a physical deformity and escaping an abusive mother in The War the Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradly, but Kayla has risen as a role model herself through her own experience of success. Garrett Stout (Football): Garrett has done an absolutely amazing job on the football field for the Govs. Coming into his first year as the QB he quickly matured into a great leader and has been an absolute warrior on the field, playing almost every play of every game as he plays offense, defense, and almost every special team. To date he has thrown for over 1500 yards and rushed for over 1100 yards on the season accounting for almost 30 TDs. He is also selfless on the field, not caring about statistics and often giving the ball or credit to the rest of the team rather than seeking it himself. He has played banged up, and often sacrifices his body in service to the team. Throughout the course of the season, there is no one I can think of who embodies the term warrior than Garrett, and much of our special season can be attributed to his leadership and work ethic.
