VERMILLION, S.D. – A pair of career-high performances pushed the South Dakota men’s basketball team to a 90-74 victory over Northern Arizona Monday night inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Junior Triston Simpson, just one game after setting a career-high 23 points, totaled 24 points on 6-of-8 shooting and sank 10-of-12 free throw attempts. Fellow junior Tyler Peterson tallied a career-high 23 points as the Coyotes shot 54.5 percent from the field. South Dakota won the rebounding battle 36-25 and was led by Brandon Armstrong with seven, a career-high. Senior Trey Burch-Manning and Peterson each grabbed six rebounds. Carlos Hines led Northern Arizona with 23 points off the bench while Brooks Debisschop totaled eight rebounds. South Dakota improves to 2-0 for the third-straight season as Northern Arizona falls to 1-1 on the year. The Coyotes now travel to the Bimini Jam in the Bahamas beginning Friday night. South Dakota faces High Point at 5 p.m. (CST). The tournament also has USD facing Air Force and UMBC.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.-A 7-0 run to end the game helped the South Dakota State women’s basketball team to an 80-71 win at Central Michigan Monday night in front of 1,679 fans at McGuirk Arena. The Jackrabbits (2-1) led 73-71 with 1:28 to play after Central Michigan had scored four consecutive points. Three Jackrabbits then combined to sink seven of eight free throws. Madison Guebert, who finished with a game-high 24 points, sank six 3-pointers. Miller logged her second consecutive 20-point game with 23 points. She also added six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Tagyn Larson scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. In her second career start, Tylee Irwin tallied 10 points. Pierre native Sydney Palmer pllayed 17 minutes but did not score in the game. South Dakota State returns to action Thursday when it hosts Creighton at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.
