A dog was rescued and people were evacuated from the nearby apartment complex, but no one was injured when an eight unit garage caught fire just after midnight this (Tues.) morning.
Pierre Fire Department captain Byron Caauwe says the fire was in the 400 block of South Central Avenue, which is directly south of Fire Station #1.
Caauwe says firefighters were told there was a dog in one of the garage units. He says they forced entry and, despite heavy smoke, found the unresponsive dog and brought it outside. Firefighters started CPR on the dog, who was revived and returned to his owner.
Firefighters were on scene for approximately 2.5 hours. Other responders on scene included Fort Pierre Fire, AMR ambulance and local law enforcement.
