A Pierre middle school science teacher has been named a National STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Scholar in 2018.
Georgia Morse Middle School principal Dr. Kylee Cumbow says Jessica Carr is one of ten middle school science teachers chosen from over 200 applicants.
The 2018 scholars designed an experiment that will travel in a NanoLab aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard space vehicle for launch into microgravity this spring. The scholars and their students will mimic the project in their classrooms, make predictions and follow the launch live. The results of the experiment will be available to all ten scholar schools within hours of the experiment’s return to Earth.
Carr and the other scholars also spent a week at advanced STEM training, received funds for a classroom Challenge Project and spent and afternoon with an internationally recognized thought leader and speaker in the field of education and knowledge retention (Dr. Eric Mazur). She will also attend the National Science Teachers Association meeting in St. Louis, MO, in April.
